ABOUT

The new media video project will document art education and its place within the public school system. The 5-10 min video presentation will introduce pupils, teachers and policy makers who are involved with and fighting for arts education.

The film will be created with the participation of students and faculty at a Middle School in East LA. Students wishing to assist will be given specific creative roles within the film-making process.

After being taught the basics, camera operators will be in charge of documenting art projects developing in class including the making of the film. The camera ops will be asked to archive the footage (date, time, place) on the iMac computers. They will also be taught how to conduct simple interviews of fellow students.

Editors in groups of two will be taught how to import and edit video using FCP. The footage shot and archived by the camera ops will be cut down into short films edited by the pupils.

Selected interviews/footage/edits will be edited by the director into the final 6-8min presentation.

Formal interviews will be conducted of faculty, pupils and pro art education advocates. These interviews will be conducted by the Director and be used as theoretical basis for the film.

The aim of the film project is to involve and teach students the film-making discipline/process and to produce a film that exposes the legitimacy, importance and depth of art education in our public school system.
